Yesterday, my sister wrote about her favourite cereal, Nature’s Path Organic Optimum Power. I like that cereal, too, but I’m more of a muesli girl, myself. One of my favourite recipes from any of our books is “The Sound of Muesli,” from Crazy Plates, page 166. It’s a creamy, high-fiber breakfast that I love making in the summer when berries are in season and inexpensive. In fact, I get really, really excited when I open my refrigerator to see a big, honkin’ bowl of it just waiting for me to dig in. Yum! As we say in Crazy Plates, “the thrills are alive with the sound of muesli!”
When I don’t have time to make muesli myself, I buy Nature’s Path Organic Blueberry Almond Muesli. You can usually find it a health food stores or the natural section of bigger grocery stores. Lots of fibre, good protein and good fats, and most importantly, it tastes great. Then, to top it all off, I use almond milk instead of regular milk. I love, love, love almond milk in cereal. If you haven’t tried it, you should. It has a smooth and creamy taste with a mild hint of almonds, and it doesn’t have that thin, watery, chalky aftertaste of rice and soy beverages. Honest! Almond milk is a great source of calcium and good fats, plus, as opposed to regular milk, it’s a low-carbohydrate choice that’s lactose and casein-free. And that’s a good thing because many, many people have allergies and intolerances to the sugars and protein in regular milk, and many of them don’t even know it! Over time, dairy products can wreak havoc on bodies that can’t tolerate it, and it’s being implicated in a host of disease conditions ranging from asthma to acne to recurrent ear infections to rheumatoid arthritis to gastrointestinal disorders to atherosclerosis. If you have any chronic health issue, you might try removing milk from your diet for six weeks and watch for signs of improvement.
You’ll find almond milk in well-stocked grocery or health-food stores near the soy and rice milk. The kind I buy is called Almond Breeze. Try it, you’ll like it!
