Small Tips to Lose a Big Belly

When you’re trying to lose fat, little things make a big difference. The simple, smart choices you make each day really do matter—like choosing bottled water over pop, fruit instead of ice cream for dessert, whole grain versus white bread or a small non-fat latte over a large one made with full-fat cream.

Rather than attempting a radical, sweeping overhaul of bad habits you’ve developed over a lifetime, try incorporating one new, healthy habit into your life each week. A little here, a little there. It all adds up. Honest! If you’re still not convinced that small, gradual changes pay huge dividends, chew on this: scaling back a measly 100 calories a day can translate into 10 pounds of weight loss over the course of one year!

Over the next little while, I thought I’d just spew out some very simple, random tips that might help you trim your tummy (or your butt, or whatever other areas are Spanx-worthy.)

Join the Singles Club Whether it’s cookies, chips, ice cream or chocolate, buy single-serve treats only. That way you won’t be tempted to absent-mindedly hoover an entire family-sized package of Oreos or Cheetos while watching TV. If you buy large packages to save money, use sealable containers or zip-lock bags to divide them into single servings. And never—ever—eat ice cream out of the container. Ever!

One Minute’s Manageable Can’t stand the thought of exercise? How about moving your muscles for a measly one minute each hour? With roughly 16 waking hours per day, that’s 16 minutes of muscle-flexing exercise that you wouldn’t have otherwise done. March in place while talking on the phone, squeeze your butt while standing in line, do push-ups against a wall, do leg lifts at the kitchen counter. It all adds up. Just move! C’mon! You can do anything for one minute!
