Have It Your Weigh

One of the toughest things about travelling is finding something healthy to eat at the airport. Since Janet and I were on QVC in the middle of the night last night and fell into bed at 3:15 am, only to get up again at 6:15, we didn’t have time to think about breakfast today. Once at the airport, we searched out all food-court options (pizza, gigantic white-flour doughy bagels, sausage, hashbrowns and scrambled eggs, etc.) and settled on a Burger King biscuit sandwich with egg, ham, and cheese. We figured it would have about the same fat and calories as an Egg McMuffin, which isn’t too horrific if you’re desperate. Janet took one bite and looked across the table at me. “You’re not going to like this,” she predicted. “All I can taste is salt.” She was right! It should be called a breakfast saltwich, not sandwich! Disgusting! Since we had some time to kill, I went online out of curiosity and found the nutritional numbers. If you have high blood pressure, you might not want to read this:

Calories: 520
Fat: 29 g (10 of them saturated)
Sodium: 1320 mg!

I don’t understand how they could possible pack that much fat and salt into such a tiny sandwich that doesn’t even taste good! I’ll stick with my Egg McMuffin, thank you very much. At 290 calories, 12 g fat (4.5 g saturated) and 790 mg sodium (still high but much lower than the BK sandwich), it’s the clear winner in the breakfast sandwich category.

On a separate note, if you live in Ontario and get City TV, you can see us tomorrow morning on Breakfast Television (probably between 8 and 8:30 am).

It CAN be hard if it isn’t convenient! I’m a student, and I absolutely adore all your books and recipes, but I find that they require a lot of chopping and prep time. You two should come up with some sort of student recipe book that includes easy and quick (but mostly quick) recipes, because I’m sure lots of younger people could benefit from a little healthy eating. All suggestions aside, I made your Melancauli Baby soup yesterday and it earned rave reviews! Actually, your tuna fish penne recipe (can’t remember the name…it’s become “Suzanne’s Pasta”) in Looney Spoons was the first recipe I ever tried–tested–on my family.

My grandson gave me (at my request) for Christmas, your book, “Eat, Shrink & Be Merry.” I have your other two books and gave them to my sisters for gifts. So far I have made, from your latest book, Indian Appleous 500 (delish) and The Better Butter Chicken (yummy). I am a Weight Watchers leader and mention your good health tips sometimes in my meetings. You gals are doing a fabulous job in calling attention to healthy cooking and eating.

I’m shocked and appalled! Who knew that two seemingly similar sandwiches were so far apart…..yikes.

I’ve given up…I just make my own – a whole wheat english muffin, reduced fat old cheddar, omega three eggs (done in cooking spray, natch) and a slice of deli ham. Tasty tasty….
