Duck, Duck, Goose!
I just had to write today to tell you about my harrowing experience yesterday while walking at High Park in Toronto. I’ve been there a million times with my dog, Lacey Lou. We always enjoy hiking along the lovely, tree-line path beside the lake, and on this day the cherry trees were in full, pink bloom, crowds of tourists were snapping photos of swans and diving ducks, children were frollicking, the sun was shining–everyone was happy and all was good in the world. Until “they” came…
Lacey and I were nonchalantly walking down a particularly narrow part of the path when all of a sudden I could see in the distance two crazed, wildly cackling geese, flying low and really fast along the path like airplanes coming in for a landing. Or more like an attack! They came straight for us, beaks open, intent on…beaking us! And they were huge, honkin’ geese! My first instinct was to duck, but since it was a goose, I dove sideways off the path and into a mucky, icky bog (wrecking my brand new Merrell hiking shoes that I just got on sale at Mountain Equipment Co-op). Then I screamed at Lacey Lou to “Run, Lacey! Run!” And she did. Only the dive-bombing lead goose flew faster and bit her right on the bum! Thinking the cookoo twenty-pound goose was going to pick my tiny, nine-pound Jack Russell up by the collar and drop her into the lake, I made a screeching fuss, arms waving, muck flying everywhere, until the goose got the message that I was NOT to be messed around with now that my new hiking shoes were ruined. And the bird flew. Phew!
I must have looked like a truly crazy person, but thankfully, no one was there to witness us getting goosed. I guess the geese were probably just protecting their babies or something, but gosh, why all the drama? Such trauma over flying geese. Now I know how Chesley Sullenberger must feel!

Haha! I’ve missed these crazy stories! Thanks for brightening my morning!
Glad you and Lacey walked away from the incident unscathed – minus Lacey’s poor little bitten bum!

…and your wrecked shoes! (Okay, I guess some losses were incurred.)

Oh that is insane! I guess there was a nest nearby but still, no excuse for that “goosing” of your sweet pup! And I am so sorry to hear about the destroyed MEC shoes, I feel your pain. I love that store. I loved this crazy story, thanks for sharing! And thank you both so much for the book. It’s been hard to contain the secret but May is almost here and I will spread the news about the giveaway soon. Hugs! ~ Suzie the Foodie

That’s hilarious! The same thing happened to me and my 2 miniature dachshunds in High Park the other day. However, we were walking down the lake (in the park) and as soon as the dogs saw the geese they bolted. It’s too funny!

Every time I see a goose now it makes me laugh
