Hairspray! (Not the Musical…)

Posted by Greta on August 13th, 2008 ·

We’re having another argument, only this time I know I’m right (for previous argument on the proper way to eat a banana, visit archived blog “Please help us settle and argument/bet”).

I can’t stand pump hairspray. I’m an aerosol girl! Yes, I’m concious of the environment and all that mumbo jumbo, but most aerosols no longer have those nasty PCBs or NBCs or XYZs or whatever they were called. Pumps are meant for shoes, not for hair. Whenever I borrow Janet’s pump hairspray, I end up with half of it on my body, all over my neck and arms, because the drops of hairspray are so big and heavy, which means I actually have to WASH MY ARMS if I’m wearing a tank top or take my silk shirt to the dry cleaner because it’s splattered in goopy-sticky hairspray gunk.

On the other hand, my wonderful aerosol can deliver an even, gentle, fine mist of tacky hair adhesive exactly where I want it: on my hair, not on my body!! Janet says aerosol hairspray’s “so stupid…it doesn’t even hold anything, so what’s the point?” Um. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be using it if it didn’t “hold anything.” I’m the queen of hairspray, after all, and, like my American Express card, never leave home without it (on my head).

A little aside here: I’ve always thought that if I was chosen as a contestant on Survivor, my one “luxury” item that I would bring along would be a can of hairspray. And why not?? I figure it’s a smart choice because it could serve several purposes: 1) hold my hair; 2) help start a fire; 3) could be sprayed in the eyes of other contestants who annoy me and 4) if I brought along the ultra stinky 1970’s “Final Net” hairspray, could act as bug repellent.

Anyway, please comment and tell me that I’m right and Janet’s wrong, and that aerosol is the only way to go, and that pump hairspray sucks.

Although I already sided with Janet on the banana issue, I’m gonna have to go with her again on this one. I’m sorry, Greta :( BUT it’s only because of the kind of hair that I have. Being a curly girl, I don’t actually use hairspray on a regular basis, but on windy days when I don’t want to end up looking like I have a tumbleweed on my head, I’ve got to hold those curls in place somehow! And the kind of hairspray specifically designed for curly hair is in pump form. If I used an areosol then I’d have way too much stiffness and not enough movement, and that would make my hair — which is supposed to be bouncy by nature — look weird. (I don’t know which kind necessarily holds better, but I find that pumps generally give you a more “flexible” hold.) However, I do agree with you that areosols ARE less messy and spray more evenly and are just generally cooler and more fun to use! (See, I’m not TOTALLY on Janet’s side! ;) )

    Hi,
I’m a curly girl too and I think all hairspray stinks! Literally! But! upon the rare occaision I’m forced to use it ! Definitely aerosol! No question! The thought of using pump HS makes me feel sticky all over!

Pump hairspraysget clogged & many times I have to pump them over & over before anything comes out & when it does its like a big puddle!. Sorry Janet but aerosol gives a much more even & softer look. ( I had to through a new can of pump spray out once because I couldn’t get it to work!)

Well, it looks like you may just win this one, Greta! I guess you deserve it after being ridiculously outnumbered in the banana argument! haha True, pump sprays do get clogged sometimes…..but I stand by my initial response that they do NOT suck — especially now that the opposition is getting stronger!! Don’t worry — I’m still with ya, Janet! :)

I don’t use much hairspray. My supershort haircut demands paste. BUT, go aerosol or GO HOME. The pump is a worthless. And dont’t even get me started on how it gets clogged and comes out in a stream. Arrrrghh!

    **don’t**

    I know, right?

Greta - I’m with you on this one. Aerosol all they way - and I’ve just discovered the BEST kind ever. It’s a dry aerosol hairspray by Aveda. It’s amazing for backcombing and it’s DRY, so it holds my hair in place and I love it even more because it isn’t sticky ever, and it comes out in the shower easily. It’s the best invention yet.

Ha ha. Looks like I’m winning this time, Janet!

    Hi girls!

Ooops, Hi you two, it’s you head dresser here. Are you both still arguing over the hairspray issue??? Well, let’s see, there are pro’s and con’s to using pump or aerosol. Most pump sprays do have more hold but they do tend to spray everywhere but the hair. Good Tip~running the spout under warm water usually stops that from happening. Aerosol is now environmentally friendly because it no longer contains CFC’s, not ABC’s or NBC’s Greta. lol It does spray directly where you want it with good hold. So I would have to agree with Greta, sorry Janet, I myself do prefer aerosol over the pump.

Man, I’m really feeling the tension here — and I’m not even the one who’s having the argument!! Could it be because I’m the only supporter of the losing side….? Haha, ya, probably!

aerosol all the way for me too!

I’m with Greta. Pump spray is a sticky awful mess that leaves us with a hard hat instead of hair! Aerosol all the way! The flexible hold types, sprayed lightly, do a wonderful job with no stickiness or residue on your skin. Ultimately we have to use what works best for us so we all win this one.
