Janet Unplugged

Posted by Janet on May 13th, 2008 ·

I’m pulling the plug! On my computer, that is! Tomorrow is moving day. I’m relocating from Ottawa, Ontario, where I’ve spent the last 23 years of my life–Gosh, I must have moved there when I was 6!) to Kitchener/Waterloo, where my sister and everyone else in our company, Granet Publishing, is. Yup, I’m no longer going to be a satellite office, a lonely planetoid trying to find its way in the vast, murky universe. I’m hookin’ up with the Mother Ship! I’m gonna be a Head Office Girl! (I hope there isn’t a dress code! And I hope I get an office with a view!) Actually, the real reason for my big move is that this year, we’re going to be launching our book, Eat, Shrink and Be Merry, into the US market. And we’re trying to sell our TV show of the same name into that market, too. That means trying to get on Oprah and Ellen and lots of other fun stuff! All of this requires a lot of creative brainstorming and collaboration with our whole gang, and that’s why I’m going there. It’s all very, very exciting!

The US launch part is exciting. The moving part isn’t. Don’t they say that moving is in the top five most stressful events that a person experiences in his/her life? Death. Divorce. Job loss. MOVING!? You know, I really shouldn’t be writing this blog today, but I’m procrastinating. Moving really sucks. Personally, I find the smell of cardboard boxes nauseating. But I found out those tape guns are great for removing unwanted hair! Honestly, I just want to blink like Jeannie or twitch my nose like Samantha Stephens on Bewitched and have everything packed, moved, and unpacked at the other end. I want this whole nasty event to be over! So, in order for this be over, I need to stop writing blogs right now and I need to unplug my compu…

Wish me luck!

I’ve lived in my house my whole life - a whole 22 years - so I’ve never experienced a move, but I can just imagine what it must be like…. So on that note: GOOD LUCK! Let us know how it goes once you’re plugged back in! :)

Good luck Janet! Good for you for embracing the change of geographic location like that. Big changes can be so good for you but I understand the stress. I just had my 9th move in 13 years from BC to Nova Scotia and it’s been INSANE!

I really hope you end up getting your show and book in the U.S. but please don’t forget us little people when you make it big! :)

I feel your pain with the moving, but I sure hope you are successful in breaking into the US market. I happen to live in the US and have been a big fan of yours since I discovered “Looney Spoons” in the library about 6 years ago. I have all your books and would love to see your show. I would even consider getting cable! Good luck!

    Hi Janet,
Don’t feel bad about moving. I got divorced almost 2 years ago but have stayed put in my condo because i hate to move and like having a 2 bedroom unit of 1,200 square feet to myself.
Best of luck with the US publicity and really enjoyed your show this past weekend on the seafood chowder.
I have made many recipes from your book and have really improved my cooking skills and am eating healthier too thanks to you and Greta.
    Best of luck.

Found the post a little late, but thought I’d welcome you to the area.

I live in Cambridge and work in Kitchener. My wife and I lived in Ottawa for six years and I still believe it’s one of the greatest cities you’ll ever find.

Other than having to put up with Maple Leaf fans, this area has a lot to offer as well.

Hope your move went smoothly and good luck with your expansion plans.
