More Than Meets the Eye

Yes, there seems to be more than meets the eye when it comes to grapefruit. Of course we know that just about every diet plan begins the day with half of one. At a mere 40 calories, it’s no wonder. But you’ll be tinkled pink to know that scientists have confirmed that there is, indeed, a compound in grapefruit that does seem to boost metabolism. (They don’t know exactly how or why, but they do know it.) Weight loss aside, you’ll want to slice up a grapefruit for its immense stash of nutritional goodies: lots of antioxidants, fiber and potassium. Not only that, grapefruit seed extract is widely used by naturopaths to zap nasty candida (yeast) and parasites in their tracks. What a greatfruit! And Japanese researchers found that when grapefruit seed extract was injected under the skin of mice, it stopped cancer tumours from growing. Wow!

But I read something the other night that made grapefruit even more appeeling: It seems that the scent of grapefruit will make middle-aged women appear six years younger to men. Why six years as opposed to ten? Not sure. Apparently the perception is not reciprocal and the grapefruit scent on men has no effect on women’s perception of them. An old wives’ tale? There’s no such thing as an old wife if she slathers her body from head to toe in grapefruit pulp and peelings!

If this is true, I’m contacting Chanel or Avon or Christian Dior or Oscar de la Renta or Sarah Jessica Parker or that hunky sailor guy who wears Old Spice or someone who concocts perfumes and tellin’ ‘em to get moving on the grapefruit thing already! (Yesterday, I ended up walking around like an idiot the entire day, unsuspecting that an organic product code label sticker had been clinging to my cleavage. Not appeeling–although I did get a lot of stares from men, and women, and I had to fend off several advances by very aggressive bees.) Oh, I just can’t wait til my grapefruit squirts from a bottle!

I’ve always loved Clinique Happy perfume because it smells like grapefruit to me. Sure enough, I checked, and it IS grapefruit! No wonder people say I don’t look a day over 29! (Or was it a day over 39?? Can’t remember.)

Ha! I’m generally not a perfume wearer, but I too really liked Happy when I tried it, and it’s the only perfume I own… and I do remember the sales lady saying it’s a citrus scent. Interesting! And, if it makes me look younger: BONUS!

The Body Shop is coming out with Pink Grapefruit Body Butter in the New Year. I know this because my daughter works there and she knew I’d be thrilled… I heard the grapefruit scent thing on the CBC about a year ago and have been searching for Pink Grapefruit scented ANYTHING since then.
