Wonder-Twin Powers, Activate!

Okay, this is getting really weird. I think Janet and I are spending too much time together. A week ago Sunday, on the 20th, we flew from two different cities to Philadelphia for our appearance on QVC to sell cookbooks. In the rental car on the way to the hotel, Janet asked me what I brought to wear on the show, hoping that we didn’t choose clashing outfits. “I brought my silky red shirt,” I replied. “Not THE silky red shirt, I hope!” was Janet’s response. “Yes, THE silky red shirt!” Oh no! Janet and I both brought the same silky red shirt that we each bought a few months ago in Toronto. We swore we’d never wear it at the same time, so we reasoned that it wouldn’t matter that we both bought the same shirt, since I live in Kitchener and she lives in Ottawa. But of all the zillions of shirts we both have in our closets, we chose to bring the exact same shirt to Philadelphia. Neither one of us brought any other options, so we went on the air looking like Flossie and Freddie Bobbsey (me–Flossie; Janet–Freddie). Oh well…the host thought it was “cute” that we were dressed alike and, besides, our mom used to dress us in matching outfits when we were little, so we’re used to it. I’ll never forget our matching baby-blue (me) and peach (Janet) “karate outfits” that our mom sewed for us in the 70s. They were really just polyester pant-suits with stylish wrap belts, but we called them our “karate outfits.” We wore them on the same day for our grade 5 and grade 6 school photos to make mom proud.

Then there was the recent photo shoot for Reader’s Digest. Again, Janet asked, “What are you wearing?” and I said, “Oh, I just bought this new wine-coloured shirt that I thought would look good for a Fall theme…let me show it to you.” I raced up to my bedroom, grabbed my great new burgundy shirt, and proudly held it up for all (really just Janet) to see. “Ta-dah! Like it?” “Yes, I do like it. In fact I just bought the EXACT SAME SHIRT last week in Ottawa.” I bought mine in Kitchener and she bought hers in Ottawa. What are the chances? I don’t like my burgundy shirt nearly as much now. (Do they still call it “burgundy,” by the way, or is that totally 80s? What I really mean is that I don’t like my “cabernet/merlot” shirt as much anymore.)

So, just when I think this Wonder-Twin thing is getting annoying, I sit down at my computer this morning to write my blog entry, not having any idea what Janet wrote about yesterday, since I was away for most of the day in Toronto. I turn on my computer, log in to our ES&BM blog website and wait patiently while my (dial-up!) computer churns away at a snail’s pace. I take a big sip of my Republic of Tea Man Kind Blueberry Green Tea that I plan on writing about. No kidding! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Janet’s post from yesterday. She stole my blog post! Now I’m steeping mad! How could that be? When there are a million topics to write about, why are we both thinking of the The Republic of Tea? They say that great minds think alike, but I’ve never thought of Janet as having a great mind. (Just kidding! She’s smarter than she looks! Oh no! That didn’t come out right either!) Actually, she IS pretty smart, though I hate to admit it. Anyway, I’ve decided that from now on, I’m only buying shirts that Janet would hate and that I’m only writing about topics that Janet doesn’t know anything about. Like cooking, for example, or sewing or knitting or baseball or crokinole or making decorative gourds or curing poison oak or backyard composting or driving the speed limit…that sorta stuff.

Okay, I can’t help but write a quick note about your blog today! My sister and I are getting together today to celebrate our 9 year “anniversary”… what sort of anniversary, you ask? Well, she was five when our birth mom gave birth to me and gave me up for adoption. So nine years ago, I at the age of 33 found my sister! That was the beginning of the most amazing relationship! Obviously we did not grow up together, but we nevertheless constantly are doing the kinds of things you and Janet do, the dressing alike, etc. One of our first years together, we both chose exactly the same birthday card for her ten year old son. I could go on and on, but I won’t! It’s just really neat, this sister thing, especially when you’ve never had a sister!! You guys know intimately about being a sister, with the six of you. And, believe me, in nine years my sister and I have been making up for lost time and loving the ongoing discovery of what being a sister means. Better go before my sister arrives and catches me in my jammies!

In some of your earlier posts you mention recipes and articles that you have in the Reader’s Digest. Is this also in the Reader’s Digest that we get in the States? If not how can we get your great recipes that you will have in there? I don’t want to miss out on any of them!

    Dear Greta,

Darn! You stole my blog topic that I planned on writing about tomorrow–how to make a backyard composter out of a decorative gourd. Now I’ll have to resort to writing about the crokinole board that I created by knitting together a series of poison oak leaves. Oh well.

    Love,
    Your smart sister

Ohmygosh!!!! I have to add this: My sister showed up today for our day together wearing “my” sandals, or at least the identical pair to a pair I bought last summer. Same color, same size, can’t tell them apart. No kidding! I guess we’ll have to write our names on them like our mother would have if we’d grown up together!! Twin-sister power, indeed!
